The thing about enjoying photography is that we tend to collect favourite photographers like they are going out of fashion. OK, I know some photographers have gone out of fashion, but that’s not to say we can’t learn a thing or two from them. One of my favourite photographers was the late Michael Busselle. I learnt quite a bit from looking at his images and reading his books. He was very much a Library man, with much of his work destined for many of the famous photographic Libraries around the world. Whilst his photographic style may seem a bit dated by today's standards there is still much to gain by looking out for his work and reading what he has to say. His photography is impeccable!
I have a couple of books of his that are very useful indeed. One of them is called ‘Better Picture Guide To Photographing People’, the other is called ‘Better Guide To Photographing Landscapes’, which I purchased a decade or so ago. Images in all his Better Guide To books are accompanied with how and why they were taken with short paragraphs that explain Seeing, Thinking, and Acting. Also, alongside each image, He gives the reader information about technique. I’m not sure if they are still published these days, but they can be purchased at Amazon UK, and I believe you can also get them at Amazon USA. They are well worth having on your shelf.
Michael Busselle (14 November 1935 – 13 July 2006) was an English photographer and writer whose photographs and writing were featured in more than 50 books. His first book, Master Photography, has sold over a million copies worldwide.
