Why does Street Photography have such a steadfast appeal? Why do a lot of people enjoy doing it? For me, and probably a lot of other photographers, there is something about the genre that touches on the primal hunting instinct that we clearly still possess. And when the signals are right, and we have our target in sight, we get a wonderful tingle down our spine. We instinctively know that we have found something special and we also know that we need to approach with a bit more than just a modicum of care. Stealth becomes the name of the game! From now on it’s just a matter of biding one’s time, patiently observing every move, waiting for that special moment when it is safe to move in and pounce. Then, ‘click’ - we fire the shot and it’s in the bag. It's all over! Only now can we move on quickly without turning back. Now we can search once again for another unsuspecting victim for our camera lens to capture.
The ‘Street’ genre is as old as photography itself, and those of us who follow in the footsteps of the masters, past and present, should be very proud to be doing so. Alfred Stieglitz 1864-1946 is one of many street photographers that we should still pay attention to. And there are plenty more like him: Joel Meyerowitz is a fantastic inspiration to us guys and gals who love the genre, and so is Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lang, Henri Cartier Bresson, and in fact the entire entourage of Magnum photographers. Unlike almost any other genre, we are so spoilt for choice in the 21st century for people to learn the street craft from. So get out there and participate. It can be really fulfilling when you get that special shot in the bag.
